Today in class, we read a New York Times article "When 'Hero' Rings Hollow" and answered questions as an assessment.

Ms. Willis gave us about 30 more minutes to finish the Antigone Inference and Prediction Questions.  We discussed the activity.  During the discussion we addressed:
  • Creon's law, students' feelings about it, why he would have made it
  • Character impressions
  • when/why someone might disobey the law.

Homework is to read the Prologue and the Parodos.

Students, don't forget to use your online resources! If you have trouble reading or understanding Antigone, by all means, google it!

1) Today we read a quote by Maya Angelou and linked it to "Penelope" and "Courage."  We used the SIFT organizer to discuss how "Courage" defines heroism and how the rhyme scheme and structure of the poem convey the definition of heroism.

2) We read and discussed the Liviu Librescu article in preparation for a graded assessment which you will complete on Friday.

3) Homework Assignment: The first six questions on the Antigone Inference and Prediction Activity
(If you were absent, please get this handout in class. )

Wednesday, October 30: Heroism Poetry Analysis

10/30/2013

Today we began as usual with a journal entry. Then, Ms. Willis went over some grammar work. She focused mainly on the issues that students were having in their writing.

  • SIFT Method with Ms. Peterson- We learned how to analyze poetry using the SIFT Method. Each student received a poetry bookmark with directions for analyzing poetry. I also gave out a graphic organizer that we used while "SIFTing" through the poems.

We learned how to SIFT using the poem's from yesterdays packet. I first demonstrated how to SIFT using the poem "Penelope." We discussed the poem together and then I gave you time to SIFT through the poem "Courage." Both poems can be found in the packet from yesterday.

Ms. Willis followed up with a discussion of both poems. She focused on the structure of the two poems as well as the rhyme schemes. Then, she connected each poem back to the theme of heroism.

Both of these poems would be great resources for your paper on "How has the definition of heroism changed?"

  • Vocab Quiz
  • Heroism Paragraphs- You worked on these last week. Pay attentions to comments. Remember: you writing your final paper on the same topic (How has the definition of heroism changed?)

We worked on a reader response to 2 poems:
"Penelope" by Dorothy Parker and "Courage" by Anne Sexton
Directions for reader response:
  • annotate both poems
  • compare and contrast the poems
  • How do both poems define heroism?
  • Reference the two poems and at least 2 other texts in a paragraph and answer the essential question: "How has the definition of heroism changed?"
  • Respond to one prompt in 2 paragraphs, one for each poem...
